CAPS Awards

Current PhD students and postdoctoral scientists in the Center for Advanced Pain Studies (CAPS) are invited to apply for the awards listed below. For a full listing of scholarships and awards available to School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS) students please visit the BBS Awards page and the UTD Office of Financial Aid. We encourage our scientists to present their research at professional meetings and conferences. Furthermore, CAPS is committed to sponsoring professional meetings and conferences, and aims to sponsor three conferences per year.

CAPS Works in Progress (WiP) Award

The CAPS WiP Award is part of the CAPS Weekly Science Series and will be awarded at the end of the fall and spring semester. CAPS members will have the opportunity to present during the Works in Progress portion of the series and meeting participants will judge presentations immediately following the presentation. At the end of the semester, WiP Best Presentation and WiP Runner Up awards will be given.

WiP Best Presentation Award – $750

WiP Runner Up Award – $250

Curtis Jones Sr. and Curtis Jones Jr. Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Research

Eligibility

Must be a postdoctoral scholar in one of the following CAPS PI’s core members laboratory (Ted Price, Greg Dussor, Kate Sadler, Michael Burton, Ben Kolber, Diana Tavares-Ferreira

Criteria

Submit a one page narrative that addresses the following criteria of your research:

  1. Novelty of research paper
  2. Significance of research paper
  3. Future impact of research paper

Must be a published or preprinted manuscript of work completed while at UTD.

Postdocs can apply multiple times, but may only receive the award once.

Award Details

A total of three awards will be disbursed in AY 2023-2024 and will include these benefits:

  1. A one-time cash award of $5,000

Notification of 2024 awards will be issued by Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024.

Nancy M. O’Neil and John Q. Stilwell , JD, PhD Fellowship in Behavioral and Brain Sciences

The Nancy M. O’Neil and John Q. Stilwell, JD, PhD Fellowship in Behavioral and Brain Sciences supports graduate students in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. It was established in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the Center for Vital Longevity’s founding and was first awarded in the 2020-2021 academic year. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the recipient of this award must be conducting research in the Center for Advanced Pain Studies. Recipients of this fellowship may reapply for the fellowship in subsequent years and will be considered alongside new applicants.

Criteria

  • Be pursuing a graduate degree in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or international student
  • For the 2024-2025 academic year, be conducting research in the Center for Advanced Pain Studies
  • Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated leadership skills and made a positive impact on their communities through activities such as but not limited to student organizations, work experience, internships and community service.
  • Recipients must sign a release form, in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), allowing UT Dallas to use application material for fellowship purposes.
