At the Center for Advanced Pain Studies we know that meaningful therapeutics arise from basic science discoveries. Translating those scientific advances from the academic setting to real world solutions is a great effort. It involves early public support through grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH) along with eventual partnerships from the private sector.

Research at public institutions generally focuses on identifying basic disease mechanisms and early therapeutic interventions. Private companies then develop therapeutics through optimization and refinement, manufacturing, and distribution. This synergistic model provides a conduit to accelerate commercialization of therapeutics and remove barriers between basic research and clinical research.

It has become increasingly difficult for a single entity to develop a drug from bench to bedside. It takes a team sharing their expertise and resources.  In a study published by Tufts University School of Medicine in 2016, it was found that only 4 of the 19 most transformative drugs developed in the previous 25 years, were commercialized by a single entity.

Public research expertise is in basic science. However, very few public research institutions can support clinical research to develop a drug. The cost of clinical trials is tremendous and NIH funding alone is usually unable to support the entire cost.

Companies Founded by CAPS Faculty

The mission of CerSci Therapeutics is singular- pain relief from new drugs developed from understanding mechanisms which cause pain, and conquering resultant neuronal sensitization.  This mandate sets CerSci apart from other companies with analgesic products / programs.  Our research is supported by robust scientific data and backed by a team with synergistic expertise.

Ted's Brain Science Products

Ted’s Brain Science Products is committed to developing topical pain relief treatments. Building off of previous research that showed the pain reducing affects of combining salicylic acid and resveratrol, we developed a topical pain relief cream. Through our research, we discovered that the specific combination of natural ingredients in Ted’s™ pain cream appears to turn the volume on nerves back to normal levels. 4E Therapeutics is dedicated to developing innovative treatments for neuropathic pain. Currently, neuropathic pain is a major area of unmet medical need. Our goal is to develop therapeutics that will transform the lives of neuropathic pain patients by targeting the underlying mechanisms causing their pain.  Visit our website for more info.

Doloromics’ goal is to find better waysto treat chronic pain. Using cutting edge computational techniques, we analyze genomic and RNA sequencing data from human patients to identify novel drug-targets and biomarkers for chronic pain. Visit our website for more info.
